Microdermabrasion At Home – What You Need to Know
Posted by admin on Aug 30, 2009
Looking for information on microdermabrasion at home but not sure exactly where to start? You have come to the right place. First, let’s look at how microdermabrasion works and then let’s look at how you can perform this treatment at home.
Microdermabrasion has become known as the “lunchtime peel” since it can be performed in less than an hour with no recovery time. It is safe to use on most skin types and is extremely effective for treating fine lines, stretch marks, wrinkles, enlarged pores, mild acne, age spots, uneven skin tones and dull skin. However, microdermabrasion is not recommended for rosacea, herpetic lesions, eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.
Microdermabrasion works by gently removing the dead, outer layer of the skin known as the stratum corneum. It is in this skin layer that many minor skin flaws such as fine lines and age spots occur. These dead cells are not always removed during normal face cleaning and can clog pores causing mild acne. Microdermabrasion exfoliates this outer layer of skin. Once the stratum corneum is broken up and removed, the body interprets this as a mild injury and begins replacing these dead cells with healthy new ones. As a result, you skin has a healthy glow and minor flaws such as fine lines either disappear or are visibly reduced.
Until recently, microdermabrasion treatments were generally done in a doctor’s office or a beauty spa. The cost of most of these professional treatments range from $90 – $200 per visit. Although many people see great improvement in their skin after the first visit, it is generally recommended that you repeat the process at least 6 times to see dramatic results. With the cost of professional microdermabrasion skincare, this can be out of reach for most people.
There are many products that allow you to perform microdermabrasion at home for a fraction of the cost. These kits are easy to use and relatively inexpensive. Make sure that you do your homework and research any kit before you make a purchase.
There are several popular brands of microdermabrasion at home kits to choose from. Some of the most popular are Youthful Essence, Dermanew and Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, L’Oreal and Zenmed. These kits range from around $25-$90 each. However, you can get several treatments out of each kit.
